Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he liked gambling on various card games when he was young. He found himself becoming very aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was playing his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a bit and moved to New York City to play some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he would play countless hours and do not win a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by being an runner for the poker players. He believed he could better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and focus attention even more on the game.
The actual improvement in his game happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would regularly challenge each other. Howard was able to access a number of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, he would tweak his strategic thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL texas hold’em.
Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest female players the poker world today. Howard headed to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in money games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
