Omaha Hi Lo: General Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting ensues where players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of players can get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical concept in nearly every poker game.
A low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the entire pot.
While it seems difficult at first, following a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the fundamental nuances of play with ease.
